Have you always wanted to take an electroforming workshop, but cant find one in the Chicagoland area? Now is your opportunity. The Art Department at Northeastern Illinois University will be offering an electroforming class during the fall semester of 2007 (August 25th until December 10th) taught by Jane Weintraub, CMAG board member and NEIU professor. The course will meet on Saturdays from 9am until 2pm for 14 consecutive weeks and may be audited or taken for college credit. In order to enroll in the class one must first be admitted to the University a simple process that can be completed online at www.neiu.edu.
Electroforming is a method of electrolytically depositing metal on a matrix either made of metal or a non metal material painted with electro conductive paint - basically, a thin metal skin is built up on a surface and then the inner core may be removed. The resulting metal object can be complex and lightweight at the same time. Participants must have basic metalworking skills such as annealing, soldering, sawing, filing, and finishing.
During this class other metalworking techniques will be covered as well whatever it takes to complete your pieces! Topics might include cold connections, wire work, chains, coloring on metal, basic stone setting, etc.
The cost of this 3 credit class will be approximately $600 which includes 14 weeks of instruction and unlimited access to Northeasterns metalworking studio. So, not only will you learn valuable techniques, youll also meet other metal smiths and get studio space to boot! What a deal
